    Gunnison District Ranger John Murphy Retires

    John Murphy's final day was on April 27th.  He will still be spending time mountain biking, camping, and fishing in the Gunnison National Forest and spending time with his wife who works for the Bureau of Land Management.  

    He says one of the biggest challenges the Gunnison National Forest faces is the increased amount of recreation that leads to resource damage, especially around Crested Butte.

    State Reacts to Gas Well Explosion in Rural Colorado

    The explosion took place last week about 30 miles north of Denver in the town of Firestone.

    Oil and gas wells in the area - along with some other wells across Colorado - are shut down temporarily.

     

    Elder Abuse In Gunnison County

    Gunnison County Adult Protective Services works with cases of elder abuse. Examples of elder abuse include physical abuse, financial mismanagement, negligence, or self-neglect.

    The agency will hold a public meeting on Thursday, May 4th at the Crested Butte Library to educate citizens on how to spot elder abuse and learn about the agency's work in Gunnison County.

    Proposal To Expand Non-Motorized Trail Network At Signal Peak

    The proposal from Gunnison Trails - a nonprofit mountain bike advocacy group - involves 20 miles of new, non-motorized trails behind the Western State campus at the area known as Signal Peak.

    A public meeting will be held Thursday, April 27th at 7 PM at the University Center Ballroom on the Western State campus.

    Areas in the Maroon Bells - Snowmass Wilderness have exceeded their threshold.

    Land managers say overuse is causing resource damage and diminishing the wilderness experience.

    Several areas in the MBSW may switch to a permit system.

    'Holistic' Management Topic of Meeting


    At a recent joint meeting between the Crested Butte Town Council and the Gunnison County Commissioners, the topic of recreation management, and a "holistic" approach towards it, was a topic of converstaion.

    "Holistic" recreation management involves looking at the whole picture, from inter-connectivity, infrastructure, communication, and amenities.

    Western Goes for 'Zero Waste'

    University President Dr. Greg Salsbury showed support for a student born initiative to significantly reduce landfill bound waste at Western. 

    The school will seek help from an organization founded by college students. KBUT spoke with some of the parties involved.
