From The Front: Two Rosebud Firefighters Share Their Experiences

    Theo Engel and Brad Pietruszka, firefighters with the US Forest Service, speak with KBUT's Chad Reich during efforts to contain the Rosebud fire near Pitkin. As of Wednesday night, the fire was 50% contained, and crews hope to wrap up containment this weekend.

     

    Housing Needs Assessment Coming In August

    According to the Housing Authority, a high rate of response is crucial to determining the actual needs in the Gunnison Valley. Rees Consulting will perform the study to determine what the needs for housing are today and into the future.

     

    Rosebud Fire Doubles In Size - Choppers & Hot Shots On The Scene

    The Rosebud Fire near Pitkin and Ohio City grew from 25 to 50 acres since yesterday. 4 helicopters, 2 planes, and over 60 firefighters are on the scene to try to control the blaze that is located in tough-to-access terrain. Much-needed rain is forecast for the area tomorrow and Thursday.

    A new study from the US Geological Survey shows that 40 times more recoverable oil and gas reserves exist in the Piceance Basin than once thought. New technologies have made it easier to tap into these resources, which sit near the city limits of both Gunnison and Crested Butte.

    A severed wire was the initial cause, but a lack of redundancy in cellular and internet service in Gunnison County kept service from coming back in a timely manner.

    Local crews worked with the Forest Service and BLM to battle the 10 acre blaze that started late Sunday night.

     

    Gunnison County's Noxious Weed Program: An Overview

    The goal is to protect the ecological and economic resources of the Gunnison Basin. While the County only eradicates near roadways on public lands, assistance to private landowners will soon be available.
