WEB FEATURE: Study Shows 40x More Oil & Gas In Piceance Basin

    A new study from the US Geological Survey shows that 40 times more recoverable oil and gas reserves exist in the Piceance Basin than once thought. New technologies have made it easier to tap into these resources, which sit near the city limits of both Gunnison and Crested Butte.



     

    Another Blaze Burning East of Gunnison

    The Rosebud Fire has grown from 5 acres to 20 acres since it started Sunday night. Crews are having difficulty accessing the terrain, and air support is largely battling the blaze at this point. The blaze is the red cross on the USFS map.

     

    Cell & Internet Down Twice In 4 Days

    A severed wire was the initial cause, but a lack of redundancy in cellular and internet service in Gunnison County kept service from coming back in a timely manner.

    The Gunnison River Festival is celebrating its 12th year at the Gunnison Whitewater Park. Director John Messner shares the history of the festival, and what's in store for this year's event, scheduled June 24-26.

     

    Walrod Fire Up Cement Creek Mostly Contained

    Local crews worked with the Forest Service and BLM to battle the 10 acre blaze that started late Sunday night.

     

    Gunnison County's Noxious Weed Program: An Overview

    The goal is to protect the ecological and economic resources of the Gunnison Basin. While the County only eradicates near roadways on public lands, assistance to private landowners will soon be available.

    Gothic Corridor Closure Now In Effect

    The closure is in response to local input and dissatisfaction with overuse and resource damage in the corridor. The US Forest Service will place 2 Field Rangers in the area this summer to educate and encourage compliance with the closure.

     

    CB's New Electric Vehicle Charging Station

    Gunnison County Electric Association has installed Gunnison County's first electric vehicle charging station at the 4-way stop in Crested Butte. While usage is still low, GCEA says they are 'ahead of the curve' by placing the station in town. A second station is expected to be installed in Gunnison this September.

     

    'Mountain Manners' Campaign For Ethics & Environmental Protection

    The Gunnison-Crested Butte Tourism Association will distribute the 'Mountain Manners' information at the Visitor's Centers, bike shops, and through hotels.
