Iceland Talk
Hays Family

Add to your calendar
Date: September 24, 7:00 pm
Continues Until:
Location: Old Rock Library
Details:  Dr. Sally Hays, a Professor of Economics at Western State Colorado
University, received a Fulbright appointment to teach and do research in
Iceland during the spring semester, 2012.  She moved to the isolated campus
of Bifröst University in western Iceland in January, 2012, where she taught
Natural Resource Economics and Developmental Economics to undergraduate and Masters students.  She also carried out research on the socioeconomic
effects of Iceland's transition from fossil fuels to renewable resources for
energy generation over the past 40 years.  In particular, she wanted to
determine if there were any lessons we could apply in Colorado, since
Iceland's energy mix looked very similar to Colorado in the early 1970s, but
now Colorado is only belatedly following a similar path towards the use of
renewable resources.  Sally's husband took leave from his job at Western, so
he and their three children could come along on the family adventure.  The
kids all attended Icelandic schools for their semester abroad and developed
lasting friendships with their classmates.  The entire family will share
their experiences, a brief history of Iceland, and photos of the magnificent
geography of Iceland at Old Rock Library on Tuesday, September 24th at 7pm.
The event is sponsored by the Crested Butte Friends of the Library, free and
open to the public.
