Clara Valdes,
Immigrant Journalist

As a child in Mexico, Clara Valdes loved watching Disney cartoons. She decided that she wanted to learn English so one day she could meet Mickey Mouse. As an adult, Clara realized her childhood dream. She has visited Disney World and Disney Land a total of five times- so far. A retired teacher, Clara presently works at her thrift store, teaches Spanish and babysits. Clara's son, Martin, attends the Crested Butte Community School. Her daughter, Mimi, returned to Oaxaca last year after graduating high school.

In 2008 Clara established the
Subel-Valdes Foundation in Oaxaca, Mexico. The Subel-Valdes Foundation assists women and children who have been victims of domestic violence, or have been otherwise abused or neglected. The foundation provides temporary housing, health care, legal assistance and educational opportunities.
